In Matthew 5, Jesus begins what has become known as the “Sermon on the Mount” with a list of beatitudes: “Blessed are [insert type of person here] for they [insert blessing here].”

One of my favorites is Matthew 5:6. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

I don’t know about you, but I eat three meals every day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each one has its appointed time. As each meal approaches, I start to get hungry. Somehow, I always know exactly when it’s noon because I get hungry for lunch.

Throughout the day, though, I am constantly drinking water. There’s no telling when I will get thirsty, but when I do, I drink some water.

What has this got to do with your walk in Christ? 2 Timothy 3:16 says that Scripture is the source of “training in righteousness.” In Matthew 6, Jesus implies that prayer is part of “practicing your righteousness.”

If you hunger and thirst for righteousness, then make meals with appointed times of Scripture and prayer; and as the day assails you, take a sip from the Living Water of the Bible and a quick request of God.

If you fill your spiritual diet with the Word of God and with a constant conversation with Him, you “shall be satisfied.”
